蒭藁ChúGǎo變星,又称蒭藁型变星米拉變星/ˈmrə/(依據其原型恆星米拉命名,其中文名稱是蒭藁增二),是一種顏色非常紅的脈動變星,脈動週期超過100天,在紅外線的星等變化超過1星等,可見光的變化為2.5星等以上[1]。在恆星演化的歷程上,它們是很晚期的紅巨星,位於漸近巨星支(AGB)。它們即將逐出外面的氣體殼層成為行星狀星雲,並在幾百萬年內成為白矮星

蒭藁變星是質量足够大,但仍小於兩個太陽質量的恆星,且它們的核心經歷了氦融合[2],已經失去大約一半初始質量的恒星[來源請求]。然而,由於它們膨脹的外殼非常大,它們的亮度可能是太陽的數千倍,而且它們的脈動是由於整顆恆星的膨脹和收縮。這過程會產生溫度隨半徑的變化,這兩個因素都會導致光度的變化。脈動取決於恆星的質量和半徑,在週期和光度(以及顏色)之間有一個明確的關係[3][4]。在可見光的視星等有非常大的振幅,不是由於光度的大變化,而是由於恆星在脈動過程中溫度的變化,在紅外和可見光波長之間的能量輸出發生了變化[5]

米拉變星的早期模型假設該恆星在這一過程中保持球對稱(主要是為了保持電腦建模的簡單,而不是出於物理原因)。最近對米拉變星的調查發現,使用IOTA望遠鏡可以分辨的米拉變星中,75%不是球對稱的[6],這一結果與之前的個別米拉變星的影像一致[7][8][9],因此,現在有迫切的需要在超級電腦上對米拉變星進行逼真的三維建模[10]

米拉變星可能是富氧或富碳的。富含碳的恆星,如欣德的紅星,是由一系列狹隘的條件產生的,這些條件推翻了AGB恆星由於疏浚而在其表面保持氧氣過剩而非碳的正常趨勢[11]。像米拉變星這樣的脈動AGB恆星在交替的氫和氦殼層中發生融合,產生被稱為疏浚的週期性深層對流。這些疏浚將燃燒氦氣的外殼中的碳帶到表面,其結果將形成一顆碳星。然而,在大約4 M以上的恆星中,會發生熱底(hot bottom)燃燒。這是當對流區的下部區域足够熱,可以發生顯著的碳氮氧循環的核融合,而在碳被輸送到表面之前,它會破壞大部分碳已經被破壞。因此,更大質量的AGB恆星不會變得富含碳[12]

米拉變星正在迅速失去質量,這些物質經常在恆星周圍形成塵埃覆蓋層。 在某些情况下,條件適合於自然邁射的形成[13]

一小部分的米拉變星似乎會隨著時間的推移而改變其週期:在幾十年到幾個世紀的過程中,週期以相當大的幅度(高達三倍)增長或減短。這被認為是由其中的殼層重燃外層殼層,引起的熱脈衝。這改變了恆星的結構,表現為週期的變化。據預測,這一過程會發生在所有米拉變星上,但在該恆星的漸近巨星支生命期內(不到一百萬年),熱脈衝的持續時間相對較短(最多幾千年),這意味著我們只在已知的數千顆米拉變星中的少數恆星中看到它,可能在長蛇座R中看到[14]。大多數米拉變星在週期上確實表現出輕微的週期變化,這可能是由恆星外殼的非線性行為引起的,包括與球面對稱性的偏差[15][16]

因為米拉變星的亮度變化很大,它們是對變星觀測感興趣的業餘天文學家們的熱門目標。一些米拉變數(包括蒭藁增二本身)的可靠觀測可以追溯到一個多世紀前[17]
