伯恩1950年5月12日生于爱尔兰首都都柏林，并在此长大。在都柏林大学上学时主修考古和语言学，毕业后他对语言的热爱有增无减，创作了电视剧本《Draiacuteocht》。年轻时就对表演产生兴趣的他，直到29岁才投身演艺界。

先是在都柏林出演舞台剧，慢慢打入了伦敦戏剧界。
伯恩在爱尔兰电视剧《The Riordans》最后一季中杰出表现为他赢得了后来衍生剧《Bracken》中的主演位置。1981年他首次触电，出演了約翰·鮑曼（John Boorman）执导的《神劍》（Excalibur）。他在HBO 2008年剧集《就诊》（In Treatment）中扮演的保罗·威斯顿医生获得评论家的大力讚賞。
