雅罗斯拉夫·帕利坎

小雅羅斯拉夫·简·帕利坎（英語：Jaroslav Jan Pelikan Jr.；1923年12月17日—2006年5月13日）[1] 是美國耶魯大學的基督教學者，主要研究基督教歷史、基督教神學和中世紀知識份子歷史。

帕利坎於1923年12月17日在俄亥俄州阿克倫出生。[2] 父親大雅羅斯拉夫·簡·帕利坎（Jaroslav Jan Pelikan Sr.）是斯洛伐克人，母親安妮·布澤科娃·帕利坎（英文：Anna Buzekova Pelikan）是塞爾維亞人。父親是芝加哥三一斯洛伐克路德教會的牧師，祖父則是福音路德教會聯盟（英文：Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Churches，後易名為美國斯洛伐克路德教會）的主教。

根據親人描述，3歲時帕利坎的母親已教會他如何使用打字機，這是由於當時他連筆都未能拿穩，就已經想開始寫作。他的語言天分來自多語言的童年成長環境，此也幫助其日後踏上研究基督教教義歷史之路（為此放棄當鋼琴家），並精通天主教、基督新教及東正教的神學。[1]

在1946年、踏入22歲那年，他獲得協同神學院神學院學位及芝加哥大學博士學位。[3]

寫作與訪問生涯 编辑

帕利坎寫了多達30本書，當中包括他的五部曲名著——《基督教傳統：教義演變歷史》（1971-1989）。後期著作專攻大眾市場，如《跨世紀的瑪利亞》、《跨世紀的耶穌》、和《誰的聖經？》等。

1983年的傑斐遜講座（英文：Jefferson Lecture）名為《傳統的證明》（The Vindication of Tradition），當中包含他的名句；[4] 此名句在1989年《美國新聞與世界報導》的訪問中加以延伸：「傳統是死人的活信仰，傳統主義是活人的死信仰。傳統活在有關過去的對話中，讓我們紀念我們當刻所在之處，而我們此刻身處的境況將由我們自己決定。傳統主義則相信從最初就沒有甚麼可以做，所有所能做的只是回到一個早已假設一致、且單一的傳統。」[5]

1962年在耶魯大學擔任提多街教會歷史教授（英文：Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History），1972年升任斯特林歷史教授（英文：Sterling Professor of History），直至1996年升為榮譽教授。1973至1978年期間曾擔任研究院副院長及院長。1984至1986年、以及1995年秋季學期是威廉·克萊德·迪瓦尼講師（英文：William Clyde DeVane Lecturer）。所獲得的獎項包括1979年由研究院頒發的威爾伯十字獎（英文：Wilbur Cross Medal）及由美國中世紀學院頒發的哈斯金斯獎（英文：Haskins Medal）。在耶魯期間，帕利坎贏了一個由《田野與流水》贊助、艾德·策恩（英文：Ed Zern）策劃的翻譯比賽。此比賽在策恩的專欄《離開歡笑》（英文：Exit Laughing）上刊登，並要求參賽者翻譯麥迪遜大道竿、槍、血腥瑪麗和拉布拉多犬慈善機構（英文：Madison Avenue Rod, Gun, Bloody Mary & Labrador Retriever Benevolent Association）的名句---「留著你的粉末、你的鱒魚飛釣和你的馬丁尼雞尾酒」（英文：Keep your powder, your trout flies and your martinis dry）---至拉丁文。帕利坎得獎作以馬丁尼作首句，因為他認為前菜應放在首位。他的得獎翻譯是：

帕利坎是美國知識份子圈的領袖，曾擔任美國文理科學院主席，也是《大英百科全書》宗教部分的編輯，又於1980年創立美國國會圖書館學者委員會。

1983年受國家人文資助委員會（英文：National Endowment for the Humanities）邀請，擔任第12屆傑斐遜講座（英文：Jefferson Lecture）的講員。此乃美國聯邦政府人文學科的最高榮譽，講座內容也成為《辯護傳統》（英文：The Vindication of Tradition )的根基。

1992至1993年在吉福德講座（英文：Gifford Lecture）發表演講。該屆講座在亞伯丁大學舉行，講題是「基督教和古典文化」。

美國總統比爾·柯林頓曾邀請帕利坎加入總統藝術及人文委員會（英文：President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities ）。帕利坎曾獲頒多達42個來自不同大學的榮譽博士。他又被委任為安嫩伯格基金會（英文：Annenberg Foundation）民主機構項目（英文：Institutions of Democracy Project ）的學者總監。

2004年和保羅·利科共同獲得克魯格人文與社會科學終身成就獎。他把所得獎金（50萬美金）全捐給聖弗拉基米爾東正教神學院（英文：Saint Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary）。當時他已在該校擔任理事。在領獎當天細談約翰·沃夫岡·馮·歌德的名句何以推動他的人生：「從你祖宗遺傳得來的，盡力轉化為自己的財產（德文：Was du ererbt von deinen Vaetern hast, Erwirb es um es zu besitzen ）。」[6]

人生中大部分時間帕利坎是路德宗信徒和該會受按立的牧者。然而在1988年，他和妻子西爾維亞（英文：Sylvia）被美國東正教教會位於紐約州克雷斯特伍德（英文：Crestwood）的聖弗拉基米爾東正教神學院，獲准正式加入該教並於該學院的禮拜堂舉行儀式。據親人說（雖然他們略有微言），改教讓他有機會拜訪教宗聖若望·保祿二世。他們甚至聽他談到改信東正教就如「回歸至它那裡一樣，層層打開我的信仰才發覺原來東正教一直在那裡。」[7] 他曾把這番話多次告訴親友，甚至在生前最後一次在聖弗拉基米爾的禮拜也說過同一番話。

儘管帕利坎改信為東正教徒，他仍然非常重視普世運動。在逝世前一年，曾在《紐約時報》為剛離去的若望·保祿二世寫訃文道：「如果東西方教會存著包容且真誠的心，致力推行合一運動，此舉可列為慶祝若望·保祿二世一生貢獻的活動和回應若望·保祿二世的祈禱（這也包括自主後以來所有基督徒的祈禱）。」[8]

2006年5月13日帕利坎因肺癌死於康乃狄克州哈姆登的家，終年82歲。5月17日葬在紐黑文的樹叢街墓園（英文：Grove Street Cemetery）。他的紀念崇拜在10月10日於耶魯的貝特耳禮拜堂（英文：Battell Chapel）舉行，致詞及演奏包括著名大提琴家馬友友和耶魯俄羅斯合唱團。
