1943年，麦克道威尔出生在英格兰霍斯福斯，在约克郡的西部，父母亲一个是酒店老板，一个是收税员。[1][2][3] 后来，他们家搬迁至北海边上的一个小城，因为他父亲是皇家空军，而他则在伦敦音乐与戏剧艺术学院学习演员。[4]

1975年，麦克道威尔和玛戈特·贝内特结婚，两人1980年离婚，这是他的首任妻子。1980年，麦克道威尔和玛丽·斯汀伯根结婚，两人育有2个孩子。1991年，麦克道威尔和凯莉·科瑞结婚，这是他的第三任妻子，他们育有3个孩子。
