1998年5月E46四門轎車版首次公佈。次年，雙門轎跑和旅行車上市。2000年，敞篷車和掀背車型也開始發售。掀背車型僅供應歐洲、南非、澳大利亞和新西蘭市場。E46推出市場後廣受好評，其駕駛性能是同級別車輛中的佼佼者。[4]2002年E46銷量達到頂峰，當年全球各型號共賣出了561,249台。.[5]市場主要的競爭者為阿尔法·罗密欧156、奧迪A4、凌志IS、梅赛德斯-奔驰C级、紳寶9-3和富豪S60。
BMW M公司在E46的車體上開發了高性能版本M3，和基型E46相比裝備了大功率引擎，限滑差速器，運動減震裝置和空氣動力學套件。E46版M3與2001年上市，僅有雙門硬頂和雙門敞篷兩個版本，並有6速手動變速器和或電控手動變速器可供選擇。

外型特徵 编辑
E46型在外型特徵上和前代E36有著革命性的變化。1991年寶馬控股美國外觀工業設計公司DesignWorksUSA後不久，即開始新一代BMW 3系列設計工作。1995年，Erik Goplen設計了E46的初稿，並由DesignWorksUSA和BMW的工程師協作完善。1996年1月，Chris Bangle受命對外觀設計進行完善。2月，設計正式被採納。外觀設計從E36出發，設計組重點提升了車輛的空氣動力學性能和增加外觀的侵略性。新設計與1997年7月16日和1998年2月16日分別在德國和美國申請專利。由於前代E39深得市場認可，因此新代車外型在起初並未獲得公眾及汽車媒體廣泛讚美。新車部分設計顯得和寶馬傳統“離經叛道”，如圓角化外型，側面看傾斜的車頂曲線，招致部分寶馬資深擁躉的不滿。1996年1月至1998年1月，進行生產籌備。雙門版也由Erik Goplen設計，大約在1996-1997年間完成。
內飾設計 编辑
全系E46搭載了多功能電腦控制的車載娛樂系統。由於在設計時預留了接口，所有E46都可以加裝BMW或第三方廠家生產的最新功能車載娛樂系統，如收音機，GPS系統，藍牙系統，車載電話，CD/DVD放映機，倒車顯影等。
動力裝置 编辑
E46動力裝置的設計重點在於減少簧下質量和增加車體剛性以適應大馬力發動機和劇烈操作。1998年上市首批E46中，發動機最大的328i僅僅比前E36 328i增加了3馬力，但車體堅固程度卻增加了70%（BMW廠方聲明）。[6]為減輕簧下質量，大量懸掛裝置部件改為鈦合金製造。[6]E46有前置後驅和四輪驅動（xi）兩個版本。根據傳統BMW將車總重分配前後軸各佔50%，[7][6][8]使得兩種方式下都能獲得極好的操縱性能。

運動套件 编辑
BMW針對E46 330i/Ci推出了改造套件，稱為ZHP改裝套件並在北美上市。2003-2005 330i，以及2004-2006 330Ci均可加裝。改造件包括外觀套件以獲得更出色的空氣動力學性能。其發動機亦有小改進，凸輪軸外型加以改進以改善氣門開閉狀態，行車電腦發動機模塊（DME）的代碼也進行改動，使得發動機功率從225 hp（168 kW）上升到235 hp（175 kW）。[43] 車體懸掛系統也進行較多改進：彈簧和減震器更加堅硬，加裝大型防側傾撐桿，以及更強的前控制臂球窩軸承。車輛比普通版更加低矮，轉彎時輪胎亦有更大的外傾角。此番改進後車輛運動性在原有基礎上有很大提升，汽車和駕駛員雜誌在賽道上親測該車，結果是0-60mph加速僅需5.6秒，完成1/4英里只需14.3秒，亦接近普通版M3的性能。
