阿諾德·沃爾芬代爾

阿諾德·惠特克·沃爾芬代爾爵士, FRS[3]（Arnold Whittaker Wolfendale，1927年06月25日—） [1][5]，英國物理學家和天文學家，他曾經在1991年到1995年之間擔任過皇家天文學家，以及1999年到2001年之間擔任歐洲物理學會的會長[2][6][7][8][9][10][11][4][12][13][14][15] 。他現在是杜倫大學的榮退教授[16]。

在他只有18個月大的時候他隨他的家人搬到了大曼徹斯特郡，他在曼徹斯特長大。1948年，沃爾芬代爾從曼徹斯特維多利亞大學以物理學士學位畢業，之後在1953年拿到了博士學位[17]。1956年沃爾芬代爾離開曼徹斯特，追隨喬治·羅切斯特（英語：George Rochester）[4]前往杜倫，他在那裡從1962年開始擔任教授職位直到1992年退休。他現在依然是杜倫大學的榮譽退休教授[16]和范·密爾德特學院（英語：Van Mildert College, Durham）[18]的院士。1970年布加勒斯特大學授予他榮譽博士學位。他分別在1973年和1977年被選為皇家天文學會院士和皇家學會院士[3]。他也曾在香港大學擁有過學術職位。

沃爾芬代爾爵士一直沒有停下過學術研究的步伐，在接近90歲高齡的時候依然有重要的宇宙學的學術貢獻發表[19]

獎項和榮譽 編輯

沃爾芬代爾擔任過全英國和全歐洲物理學界幾個最具有榮譽性的職位。從1981年開始他是英國皇家天文學會的會長直至任期屆滿。在1991年沃爾芬代爾被英女王伊麗莎白二世任命為皇家天文學家和女王陛下的學術顧問直到1995年辭職[1][4]，馬丁·里斯接替了他這一職位。他在1995年被冊封為貴族，獲封下級勛位爵士[1]。在1994年，他被選為英國物理學會會長，直至1996年任期屆滿退職。他在1996年獲得了大不列顛皇家研究院（英語：Royal Institution of Great Britain）的實驗物理學教授這一榮譽職位，並且在1999年到2001年之間擔任歐洲物理學會的會長[2][4][15]。
