WebM

WebM是一個由Google資助的專案，目標是構建一個開放的、免版權費用的影片檔格式。該影片檔格式應能提供高質素的影片壓縮以配合HTML5使用。

WebM專案是一個使用BSD許可證的開源專案。它採用了On2 Technologies開發的VP8及其後續版本VP9影片編解碼器和Xiph.Org基金會開發的Vorbis、Opus音頻編解碼器，使用的封裝格式則以Matroska格式為基礎[2][3][4]。

Apple公司在macOS Big Sur 11.3的Safari中，加入了對Google WebM影片編解碼器的支援。

WebM專案是在2010年的Google I/O會議上發佈的，之中宣佈將會支援WebM的網頁瀏覽器有Mozilla Firefox[5][6]、Opera[7][8]和Google Chrome[9]。另外微軟也宣佈，只要在本地安裝了VP8編解碼器，Internet Explorer 9也能支援WebM檔案格式[10][11]。2015年9月，微軟宣佈Windows 10內建的Edge將支援WebM[12]。2021 年，蘋果發佈了適用於macOS的Safari 14.1，為瀏覽器添加了原生WebM支援。[13] 其後，蘋果在iOS 15的Safari 15中加入了WebM支援。[14]

VLC[15][16]、Miro[17][18]和Moovida[19]等播放器也已宣佈會支援。另外，Adobe已宣佈Adobe Flash Player將在未來支援VP8，但還沒有宣佈會支援Vorbis或WebM[1][20]。

Android從其2.3版本開始支援WebM格式[21]。羅技計劃使用WebM做為其視像通訊服務的一部分[22]。

AMD、ARM和博通等硬件製造商宣佈他們有興趣支援WebM的硬件加速[23][24]。Intel也考慮，若WebM能得到大眾接受的話，會在其電視晶片上支援WebM的硬件加速[25]。高通公司和德州儀器也宣佈會支援[26][27]。
