該在線雜誌由前新共和編輯邁克·金斯利於1996年創辦，最初由微軟擁有，是MSN的一部分。2004年，它被華盛頓郵報公司（後更名為格雷厄姆控股公司）收購，自2008年起由格雷厄姆控股創辦的The Slate Group負責管理。Slate總部位於美國紐約市，並在華盛頓特區設有辦事處[7]。
法語版slate.fr於2009年2月由四名記者創辦，其中包括Jean-Marie Colombani、Eric Leser和經濟學家賈克·阿達利。法語版的四位創始人持股50%，The Slate Group持股15%。[8][9]2011年，slate.fr創辦了一個報道非洲新聞的獨立網站Slate Afrique，其編輯部位於巴黎。[10]
