888是一個純位數（由相同位元重複而組成的自然數）[1]。 是所有的每一個數字各出現3次的數中最小的立方數[2]，同時也是唯一一個3個不同的數恰好分別出現3次的立方數[3]。另外，888是所有能被24整除而且數字和是24的數中最小的數[4]，同時也是其中一個同時能被其數字和以及其各個位上的數字整除的一個數[5]。
888也是一個實際數（practical numbers），意味着其本身可以用他的所有不同的因子（包括它本身）的和來表示[6]。

在基督數秘術中，888代指耶穌，有時又特別代指「救世主基督」（Christ the Redeemer）。這種表示方法一說來源於將耶穌的名字的原文所對應的數字相加而得出[7]，另一說稱這個數字與獸名數目666的意義正好相反[8]。
在中國，888是一個吉利的象徵。數字8在標準漢語中音同「發」，三個8組合在一起代表着富貴與吉祥[9]。正因如此，在中國，數字「8」連續出現三次或以上的電話號碼會被視為幸運號碼，同時受到許多人的歡迎[10]。
