樂隊成立於2010年並在同年獲得了Músíktilraunir（英語：Músíktilraunir）音樂競賽冠軍。在2011年，他們發佈了首張專輯My Head Is an Animal，並在美國公告牌排行榜取得了第六名的成績。其中的單曲「Little Talks（英語：Little Talks）」在許多國家都榜上有名，在美國公告牌另類音樂排行榜上更是名列榜首。

值得一提的是，樂隊贏得了2013年歐洲跨國界音樂獎，該獎旨在獎勵在歐洲各國取得成功的音樂藝人。

在音樂創作上，樂隊常使用奇幻主題的歌詞，用二重唱與悅耳的民謠旋律編織歌曲。演奏時常使用小號、結他、鋼琴、手風琴和低音結他。通過對流行搖滾成分與敘事曲風格的結合，樂隊打造出了自己富有感染力的歐洲民謠搖滾印記。[2]

相隔了四年，在2015年3月16日，Of Monsters and Men這次邀請到曾為謬思合唱團/MUSE、擁抱人群樂團/Foster The People等樂團操刀的另類音樂王牌製作人Rich Costey，一起打造全新專輯Beneath The Skin（英語：Beneath the Skin (Of Monsters and Men album)）。最先釋出的單曲Crystals （頁面存檔備份，存於互聯網檔案館），同時也是專輯的開場曲，已在冰島排行榜拿下冠軍。
