該書為章伯斯的妻子格特魯德·霍布斯（Gertrude Hobbs）用速記記錄了章伯斯在講道中對學生和士兵靈修的內容。[4] [9]
章伯斯於1917年死後，遺孀在1927年與牛津的奧爾登（Alden）一起出版了這本書[10]，於1935年由Dodd, Mead, ＆Co.在美國首次出版。版權由「章伯斯出版會」於1963年續簽。自1992年出版了由詹姆斯·賴曼（James Reimann）編輯的「當今語言更新版」，對應聖經的「新國王詹姆斯版」，並已成為一系列基督教靈修期刊、日曆和兒童讀物。[11]
