OpenShot的核心影片编辑功能是以C++函式库实现，称之为libopenshot。OpenShot使用Qt部件工具箱并提供Python API。
支持的视频格式与编解码器支持 编辑
OpenShot支持大部分FFmpeg所支持的编解码器，如WebM（VP9）、AVCHD（libx264）、HEVC（libx265），以及音频编解码器如mp3（libmp3lame）与aac（libfaac）。这个程序也可以渲染可上传至视频网站的MPEG-4、ogv、BD、DVD影片与Full HD影片。

大约在2013年时，OpenShot被批评不够可靠[9][10]。开发者回应表示，OpenShot不稳定来自于MLT函式库与GTK时间轴。OpenShot 2系列则编写了自己的函式库来供视频处理使用，移除对不稳定函式库的依赖。开发者则指出这会让新版的软件更稳定。

Bryan Lunduke在2017年3月31日于Network World上撰写了一篇评论，其指出Openshot 2.3“新转场工具与标题编辑器都有很滑顺的性能。”[11]Lunduke也提到其提供了独立于Linux发行版的软件打包方式，如AppImage等[11]。
