鱼鸮属由法国博物学家勒内-普里梅韦勒·莱松于1831年创建，包含从爪哇和印度的鱼鸮。[1]其模式种为马来渔鸮（Strix ketupa）[2]属名源自马来渔鸮的马来语名“Ketupok”。[3]
