博斯沃思1928年12月29日生于英格兰谢菲尔德。他的父亲克利福德·博斯沃思曾在监护委员会（英语：Board of Guardians）和养老金与国家保险部（英语：Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance）工作；母亲名叫格拉迪斯·康斯坦斯·格雷戈里（Gladys Constance Gregory）。他在牛津大学圣约翰学院获现代史文学学士学位，在爱丁堡大学获中东学（英语：Middle Eastern studies）文学硕士与研究博士学位[1][2]。

进入爱丁堡大学前，他先在苏格兰农业部（Department of Agriculture for Scotland）工作，在那里认识了安妮特·艾伦·托德（Annettee Ellen Todd），两人于1957年9月19日结婚,后生有三女[1]。

他在圣安德鲁大学、曼彻斯特大学、普林斯顿大学人文学中心（Center for the Humanities）有长期教职，2004年后并任埃克塞特大学客座教授。2015年2月26日，他在萨默赛特郡约维尔去世[1]。
