In the experiments, which took several months to complete, proton beams from Columbia's Van de Graaff accelerator were transmitted through pipes to strike a 2 mm. Boron target at the entrance to a spectrometer chamber. The theory confirmed by the Columbia experiements deal with a type of sub-atomic behavior known as ""weak interaction."" one of nature's four basic kinds of physical interaction. Many laboratories throught the country have been attempting to confirm the theory since its formulation in 1958.
