A painting made by Boris Schatz of his own volition in Warsaw during 1877-1878, and publicized as an authentic portrait of the Rabbi. It was handed by the painter to Channaya Schneersohn of the w:Schneersohn family as a gift, and the former recommended that it be publicized as an authentic rendering copied from an original found in archives. Schatz himself bolstered the claim in a 1898 article he wrote, claiming to have seen the old lost painting. In 1938, his letters revealed the truth posthumously. Chabad spokesmen did not deny this.
