艾梅爾出生於安大略多倫多，是男演員羅比·艾梅爾的堂哥[1]。

艾梅爾於2007年12月8日在多倫多娶了第一任的加拿大妻子Carolyn Lawrence[2]，他們在2010年離婚。2012年12月25日，在加勒比海一個私人婚禮儀式上，他娶了身為女演員和模特兒的卡珊娜·慧特克特[3]，並在2013年5月26日時在新奧爾良舉行二次婚禮儀式[4]。此外兩人還有著一個女兒Mavi（出生於2013年10月）[5]。

史蒂芬·艾梅爾一開始只有出演《但丁灣（英语：Dante's Cove）》、《同志亦凡人》等電視劇。2007年，他贏得了擔任主角的客人《再生（英语：ReGenesis）》的雙子座獎[6]。同年，他還被提名為《Rent-a-Goalie（英语：Rent-a-Goalie）》雙子座獎中的最佳全體演員類。2012年1月，艾梅爾在CW的電視劇《綠箭俠》系列主演漫畫英雄角色奥利佛·昆恩／綠箭俠，就此成名。

2015年3月，宣布他將於《忍者龜：變種世代》的2016年續集《忍者龜：破影而出》中飾演凱西·瓊斯[7]。
