艾梅尔出生于安大略多伦多，是男演员罗比·艾梅尔的堂哥[1]。

艾梅尔于2007年12月8日在多伦多娶了第一任的加拿大妻子Carolyn Lawrence[2]，他们在2010年离婚。2012年12月25日，在加勒比海一个私人婚礼仪式上，他娶了身为女演员和模特儿的卡珊娜·慧特克特[3]，并在2013年5月26日时在新奥尔良举行二次婚礼仪式[4]。此外两人还有着一个女儿Mavi（出生于2013年10月）[5]。

史蒂芬·艾梅尔一开始只有出演《但丁湾（英语：Dante's Cove）》、《同志亦凡人》等电视剧。2007年，他赢得了担任主角的客人《再生（英语：ReGenesis）》的双子座奖[6]。同年，他还被提名为《Rent-a-Goalie（英语：Rent-a-Goalie）》双子座奖中的最佳全体演员类。2012年1月，艾梅尔在CW的电视剧《绿箭侠》系列主演漫画英雄角色奥利佛·昆恩／绿箭侠，就此成名。

2015年3月，宣布他将于《忍者龟：变种世代》的2016年续集《忍者龟：破影而出》中饰演凯西·琼斯[7]。
