2013年11月,一项名为K2“第二道光”的新任务计划提交审议[4][5][6][7]。K2将涉及使用开普勒太空望远镜的剩余能力,即约百万分之300的光度精度,而之前约为百万分之20,来收集数据,用于研究“超新星爆炸恒星形成太阳系天体,如小行星彗星…”,并用于发现和研究更多的系外行星[4][5][7]。在这项拟议的任务计划中,开普勒太空望远镜将在围绕太阳地球轨道平面内搜索更大的区域[4][5][7]
