Unimate

該機器人由喬治·德沃爾（George Devol）發明於20世紀50年代。他在1954年為其申請了專利，該專利於1961年獲得批准（美國專利第2,988,237號）。這項專利的開頭是：
本發明涉及機械的自動操作（特別是處理裝置），以及適用於這種機械的自動控制裝置。[1]
德沃爾與他的生意夥伴約瑟夫·恩格爾伯格一起創辦了世界上第一家機器人製造公司Unimation。[2]
該機器人在美國新澤西州尤因鎮的內陸費舍爾嚮導工廠（Inland Fisher Guide Plant）的通用汽車裝配線上工作[3][4]，它也因此成為世界上第一個工業機器人[5][6]。最初的Unimate包括一個類似計算機的大盒子，連接到另一個盒子，並連接到一個機械臂，系統作業存儲在磁鼓存儲器中。這台機器承擔了從裝配線運輸壓鑄件並將這些零件焊接在汽車車身上的工作，這對工人來說是一項危險的任務，如果他們不小心的話，可能會因吸入有毒氣體中毒或被截肢。[6]
