索引服務

索引服務（Indexing Service，舊稱Index Server）是一個維護檔案索引的Windows服務，它可以維護電腦上的大部份檔案以改善搜尋電腦和企業電腦網絡的效能，並且更新索引無需使用者介入。在Windows 7中，它被新的Windows搜尋索引器取代。另外，有IFilter外掛程式可以擴充索引能力以支援更多檔案格式，並且協定相容舊版索引服務與新版Windows搜尋的索引器。

索引服務是作為一個桌面搜尋服務在Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack[1]和Windows 2000及之後的版本中提供。[5]，那時它作為微軟伺服器軟件IIS的內容搜尋系統。它的起源最早可追溯到微軟的Cairo作業系統專案，那時它作為對象檔案系統的內容索引器。Cairo專案最後被放棄，但內容索引功能成為了之後的Windows桌面和伺服器作業系統的組件。例如在Windows 2000中，其搭載了索引服務3.0。

在Windows Vista中，內容索引服務被預設啟用的Windows搜尋索引器取代。索引服務在Windows Server 2008中仍然存在，但不會預設安裝與執行。[4]

索引服務在Windows 7和Windows Server 2008 R2中就已被棄用。[6]並在Windows 8中被移除。

搜尋介面 編輯

在初步建立索引後可進行全面的搜尋。建立索引可能花費幾小時乃至幾天，這取決於特定目錄的大小、硬碟速度、使用者活動、索引器設置和其他因素。使用索引服務搜尋時也可使用UNC路徑和對映的網絡驅動器，如果共用伺服器索引了適當的目錄並且意識到正在共用。

在索引服務被打開並建立適當的索引後，可以多個方面用它搜尋：Windows工作列的開始功能表在索引服務可用時會使用它搜尋，甚至接受複雜的查詢。在微軟管理控制台的「電腦管理」擴充的「服務查詢表單」中可以用它執行查詢。以及，第三方應用程式（例如「Aim at File」和「Grokker Desktop」）可以使用它。

Microsoft Index Server 2.0不檢測處在掛載分區中的目錄的變更。由於檔案系統的技術原因，它不支援掛載的卷。[7]
