1956年出生於荷蘭恩斯赫德，1977年畢業於格羅寧根大學，[6][7]1979年畢業於辛辛那提大學。[8]1979年進入寶潔擔任成本分析師，1995年升任英國寶潔總監，2001年升任歐洲區總裁。2006年加入雀巢擔任首席財務官和美洲區總裁。[9]2009年加入聯合利華擔任集團行政總裁。2019年辭任由喬安路接替。此外他還擔任世界企業永續發展委員會會長。

已婚有三個兒子。

2018年5月獲得喬治梅森大學榮譽博士學位。[11][12]
