建造

她由巴羅市的維克斯-阿姆斯特朗船廠建造， 1939年下水，1940年4月16日開始服役，排水量28,000噸，載機57架，其中有33-36架收在裝甲機庫中。她比之前的皇家方舟號和之後的不屈級、怨仇級載機要少，這是因為其重甲保護的機庫比皇家方舟號小。 但是在改裝中去掉了飛行甲板下翹尾並採用永久甲板駐留方式裝載飛機後，載機量大大上升。 她因為1940年5月24日海試時達到了113,700馬力及234.2轉速而被船員們暱稱「健壯號」，準確的速度由於去掉了定深拖筏而未能記錄，但估計有31節。
