编辑2021年4月，《真人快打》上映后，乔·塔斯利姆透露，如果华纳兄弟决定继续拍摄续集，他将签订四部续集的合约[2] 。赛门·麦奎德亦表示，如果拥有好的剧本，他将愿意回归执导续集[3]。其后，麦奎德于采访中透露，首集并没有出现强尼·凯吉是因为凯吉是一个“个性刚强”的角色，让他出现会使电影变得失衡。他亦表示潜在的续集可以探索凯吉和琪塔娜等角色，并希望加入更多女性角色[4]。2021年11月，制片人陶德·嘉纳在Twitter上暗示续集正在开发中[5]。2022年1月，续集正式确认制作，由杰里米·史列特撰写剧本[6]。2022年5月，史列特确认计划让凯吉出现于续集[7]。2022年7月，宣布新线影业为续集亮起绿灯，麦奎德将回归执导续集[8]。

拍摄
编辑该片于2023年6月22日在位于黄金海岸的威秀工作室开始进行主体拍摄[12]。2023年7月，受2023年美国编剧协会大罢工影响暂停拍摄[13]。随着罢工结束，拍摄正式于11月23日复工，并于2024年1月杀青[14]。
