肯德里克·拉马尔为电影《黑豹》创作原声带，电影导演瑞恩·库格勒挑选拉马尔因为“他艺术主题与我们在电影中探索的主题一致[1]。”拉马尔最初只会为电影制作几首歌曲，但他看了电影的大部分后，他决定创作这张专辑。
2017年12月22日，拉马尔发布自己的单曲《Love》，录影带中有一个隐藏彩蛋，场记板上写着“B.Panther Soundtrack Coming Soon”，暗示他参与了《黑豹》原声带[2]。

拉马尔在2018年1月4日，发布第一首单曲《All the Stars》，与歌手SZA合作[1]。在2018年1月11日，发布第二首单曲《King's Dead》，与杰·罗克、拜见罗宾逊一家和占士·布雷克合作[3]。在2018年2月2日，发布第三首单曲《Pray for Me》，与威肯合作[4]。该原声带于2018年2月9日发行[5]。
