紅冠雀體重約14.28克，翼長約63.8毫米，嘴峰長約13.6毫米，喙寬度約4.6毫米，喙厚度約6.2毫米，跗蹠長約18.8毫米，尾長約61.1毫米。紅冠雀在其分布區內為留鳥，其棲息在密集的灌木叢中，食性為草食性。[3]
