這一名字起初源自希伯來語詞「 מַתִּתְיָהוּ」（Matityahu），意為「來自雅威（耶和華）的禮物」。「 מַתִּתְיָהוּ」先是經希臘化為「ατταθίας」（Mattathias），後來先又逐步簡化為「Ματθαῖος」（Matthaios）。「Ματθαῖος」後來又被拉丁化為Matthaeus，最後演化成英語人名「Matthew」[3][4]。
