OPEN LETTER TO WIKIMEDIA FOUNDATION FROM CHINESE WIKIPEDIA USERS

Mr. Chair and Members of the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation:

We have heard of the Wikimedia Foundation's decision to apply the arrangement of compulsive secure login (i.e. HTTPS login) to all users from Aug. 21st, in order to protect privacy of Wikipedians all over the world. However, our colleagues from Mainland China cannot access to the secure login link. Thus, they may edit the encyclopedia without log-in, hence making a great loss in privacy of users of Chinese, Cantonese, Wu and other languages, as their IP will be published. Meanwhile, they can no longer upload files onto Wikimedia Commons.

As a matter of fact, a minor adjustment can be made to avoid such results, which billions of people benefitting from, without any violation of privacy from the rest of the world.

We have talked about this in faith, but we do not guarantee the accuracy. There are three solutions we have considered that you may refer to:

  • Make unsecure login arrangement as default from any Chinese, Cantonese, Wu, Tibetan and other project. However, in this way certain contributors will not be able to edit in other languages nor upload files onto Wikimedia Commons;
  • Make unsecure login arrangement as default from IP in Mainland China.
  • Provide non-secure log entry for certain users. This option can be considerable with those who can not access Wikipedia's HTTPS link.

We hereby make this request earnestly for implementing such adjustment to benefit ten millions of people.

We appreciate your effort to spend time and read this letter.
